Lots of people pursue fame, social status, wealth, etc, just so they can fit into a group. There's some in-built herd mentality that compels us to, in the words of Tim Jackson:

It is about us, people, being persuaded to spend money we don't have, on things we don't need, to create impressions that won't last, on people we don't care about.

All the idiots, selling away their freedom for a cheap crumbly exterior. The economy of delusion is in full effect.
