There's Always the Google Vortex

the google vortex is
here

for those tempted to make the leap ===

James Gosling, the creator of the Java programming language, just broadcasted his decision to join Google.

My first reaction was that this was another sad case of someone succumbing to the Google Vortex.

But that would be a stupid perspective based upon the very limited information available to us about that decision.

Still, because they tend to stand out, one can't help but notice the rift in the pathways taken by talented people.

On one hand, you've got extremely smart people - programming language designers like Guy Steele and Guido Van Rossum - who seemingly thrive in the large corporations that employ them.

On the other, you've got the independents. People like Jeff Hawkins (Palm) driving forward with his independent Brain research, or Paul Graham driving his vision of holistic seed-funding. Both have deep technical capabilities which, combined with resources offered by a company like Google, would be a potent combination for creation.

Of course, they choose the alternate path of staying independent and beholden only to their own vision.

Why I bring this up is that as a talented person, I think it's very likely that one will find themselves in a situation that demands either stuanch independence, or unwavering dedication to the alternative. In other words, the title of this post would more accurately be, 'There's Always the ____ Vortex', depending on which decade you're in.

In any case, my takeaway from this is clear: We'll all have to choose our paths, and they will have their tradeoffs. How clear we are about that choice is in direct proportion to the fulfilment in our lives.

which has already proven to be the most useful book I've owned, mainly because of its timeless wisdom coupled with the relative ease of access. It's easy to pick it up and find a single aphorism that sums up the lessons learnt during your day. By the time you're unable to find a suitable one, you would have had enough wisdom to come up with your own.
