When I say artists, I'm referring to the kind of artist that Seth Godin refers to in his book 'Linchpin'. The person who forges ahead, without a map, who is capable of rapid innovation in the face of change. Most importantly, the person who has the courage to do what needs to be done.
In a world where just being good isn't good enough, the distinguishing factor of an artist, is the person's courage to speak up and be known, to take risk and bear responsibility , to take the value that they create and spread it beyond themselves.
That is why it is good news, that the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) haswon legal protectionsfor Video Artists, Cell Phone Jailbreakers, and Unlockers.
It's good news because now people don't need courage to succeed in those acts. A barrier to entry has been lifted, and whenever that happens, human wealth goes up as a whole (think blogging).
But that's not what I'm excited about. Instead, I'm excited about those people who once had their art 'to themselves' are about to do. Knowing the mind of a seasoned tinkerer, the person will eventually find a way to break the law again, venturing into new unknowns and creating new value that will surprise and amaze. And that can't be bad, can it?
